Days
What are days for?
Days are where we live.
They come, they wake us
Time and time over.
They are to be happy in:
Where can we live but days?
Ah, solving that question
Brings the priest and the doctor
In their long coats
Running over the fields.
Philip Larkin
Poetry is for all times, for all people! You’d better believe it! And you better do it!
Read it for your satisfaction, and if you’re so moved, write some poetry as well. It is after all the best way to express feelings, it is after all the quintessence of language.
Poetry is a salve, a surprise, a thrill, a joke, a comfort, an encouragement. And poetry tell us so much about ourselves and the world, and what it means to be human!
We reach out for poetry for so many important occasions in our life- be it a wedding, a birthday, a funeral, a milestone of some sort. So why not reach out for poetry in the day to day?
Only look and you will find the one that suits you. By my computer I have a poem-a-day volume and on my computer I subscribe to a-poem- a day. It takes a few seconds to read, and helps set up my day, every day of my life, for me.
If you’re pushed for time, start out on your poetry journey with Japanese haiku – a tiny two line poem that always mention nature.
Here’s a favourite poem of mine that reminds me to treasure each day.
Find some favourites of your own and leave them round the house!
